Everyone is affected by the recession. That includes the young person just entering the job market to the seasoned professional that has given a lifetime of dedicated service. We all react to the loss of a job from a very personal perspective and each loss is just as great as the next. These tough times test the very core of who we are. They force us to see ourselves truthfully and how we handle situations that are seemingly out of control. A very important reality of job loss is not to go into the wood work and hope someone will discover you. If a person is willing to see beyond the loss of the job and open themselves to other possibilities, they will see a negative situation as the prelude to into something positive. Through volunteering you could reinvent yourself through the opportunities that you never knew were waiting for you to discover them.
Volunteering is way to keep yourself focused, uplifted, connected to people other than family and just a way to keep your self esteem in a positive state of validation. As a volunteer, you are pretty much treated like an employee but one that is not paid for your services in dollars. You are paid with gratitude, respect and a number of plus that you would not have experienced had you not lost your job. Volunteering is a way to learn a new skill or learn to do something you often wondered about but did not have time to devote any amount of time tot. Volunteering is an excellent source of networking. It is a way to show potential employers your skills and your ability to be all that you say you are without the potential employer feeling obligated to hire you after a period of time. But be warned, few volunteer opportunities turn into full or part time work. They do however make great references for potential employers.
Finding a place to offer your services as a volunteer are as easy as looking in the telephone book under the organizations that use volunteers. Call them and make an appointment to come visit with them. From there anything goes. You may find yourself doing work that was better for you than your full time job. You may even find a way to volunteer after you return to the job market.
